The Very Beginning

Canada's Confederation began on July 1st, 1867 with the passing of the British North America Act. This is why we celebrate Canada Day on July 1st of every year. Great Britain passed this act which in turn created a united Canada out of three British provinces; New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and the province of Canada (this was divided into Ontario and Quebec). Unlike the American confederation, this act was a mutual agreement between Great Britain and Canada. Both Canada and Britain had grown weary of their tenuous relationship. This act allowed Canada to elect their own federal government and have control over many aspects of Canadian society, but it did not give us complete independence.
